GTA New Game Reveal Has Gamers Saying The Same Thing: 'That's Crazy'

Not long now people...

The GTA series has come such a long way since the first game dropped for PC, PS1 and Game Boy Color, all the way back in 1997. That featured a top down perspective and almost none of the features that now serve as staple hallmarks for any new release.

The 2000s were where Rockstar really managed to build on their momentum with each passing game, improving their reputation (and their games), securing their position as one of the highest quality developers in the industry.

GTA IV was undoubtedly a big success for them company, so you'd be forgiven for thinking that the announcement that GTA V was in active development would have been a pretty enormous one, particularly in terms of social media numbers.

It Was a Different Time for Social Media

As pointed out by RockStation on Twitter/X, a tweet confirming as much on the official Rockstar page, two years before the release of GTA V in 2011, has only managed to garner 3.9k likes at the time of writing.

Even more extraordinarily, it seems that most of those came later as users discovered the lack of likes and sought to add to them. Compare that with the tweet confirming that the first trailer for GTA VI was on the way, a considerably less significant update relatively speaking, which managed to hoover up a ridiculous 1.4m likes.

Now, of course, a lot of that will relate to the popularity and growth of Twitter as a platform, as well as Rockstar's follower count, rather than the success of GTA before 2011, but it doesn't stop the scale of the company's and franchise's growth being pretty extraordinary.

It seems that fans in the comments were in agreement, with many stunned at just how little interaction that announcement received. "That’s crazy! I remember how much hype there was back then and it was a lot!" one comment read.

"Well this is the era when smartphones just barely getting on-par with casual browsing on a PC, it was changing times. God I feel old now," another user added, explaining the dearth of likes from the community.

With no further news on the release of GTA VI, we'll just have to assume that the currently scheduled release date is set to go ahead, and that puts us just seven months away from its arrival.

Whenever it does finally get here, it's difficult to see how it will be anything other than one of the biggest games of all time.
