Grand Theft Auto fans are loving a delightful twist on the franchise’s formula, and it’s a great one to play while you’re waiting for GTA VI.
Given how visually striking Grand Theft Auto has become over the years, with sprawling open-worlds and hyper-realistic detail, it’s easy to forget its humble beginnings as a top-down action-adventure game.
You wouldn’t think that looking at GTA VI of course, the series has come a long, long way since 1997
This new game sort of takes Grand Theft Auto back to its roots but it’s not made by Rockstar Games.

It’s called the precinct, and like those early Grand Theft Auto titles it’s a top-down game where the player acts as the law rather than the lawless.
The description reads: “Averno City, 1983. Gangs rule the streets and your father lies restless in his grave. Clean up the city, uncover the truth, and embark on thrilling vehicle chases through destructible environments in this neon-noir action sandbox police game.”
So far it’s been performing really well on Steam, as at the time of writing there are 5,000 players enjoying the game right now.
The all-time user peak so far has been just under 10,000, which will likely increase as more people become aware of the game.

Players have praised its twist on the formula Grand Theft Auto created, with some adding that it’s oddly cathartic to be the one foiling the plans of criminals rather than be the ones driving the chaos, you can even give NPCs parking tickets.
With great reviews and a decent playerbase already, it looks like The Precinct is going to be a solid title, and it’s worth checking out if you haven’t already, especially while you wait for GTA VI to drop on its new release date of May 2026.
