Prince Of Persia Remaster Mod Is Worth Playing, Since Ubisoft Won't Do It

A good reason to revisit 2003.

Ubisoft’s official Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake may officially be dead, but this fan-made remaster mod is the next best thing.

Last month, we reported on several Ubisoft projects that had been cancelled, following restructuring and layoffs that have occurred at the publisher.

Among these titles was the ill-fated Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, which had seen numerous delays and setbacks over the past five years. Well, it seems the project is officially dead now.

While the news has been difficult for any die-hard Prince of Persia fans, the original game still lives on thanks to it being rather accessible on modern PCs. And in particular, there’s a remaster mod available for all players to download for free (thanks, Dark Side of Gaming).

Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time Remaster Mod Is The Best Version Of The 2003 Game

Sands of Time Remastered is a mod released back in August 2025, which essentially remasters the game’s visuals to look better at HD resolutions. I mean, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a game from 2003, so it’s bound to look a little dated by now.

The game still does retain its 2003 models and lighting, but overhauls the textures so they look better on modern computers. The same goes for cutscenes, which have now been remastered with HD resolutions.

It also changes the design of the Dagger of Time, so it looks similar to how it's presented during cutscenes and on the cover of the game. It’s a little more consistent now.

If you’re looking to play Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time on console though, it’s a bit trickier. It isn’t available to play on PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch, but Xbox Series X can play disc copies of the original Xbox version.

As DSOG also reports, there’s a Reshade plugin which also gives the game modern features such as Ray Tracing. While not as nice as native, real-time ray tracing, this at least makes some areas of the game look a little crisper.

With the remake officially dead, it looks like getting Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time playable on modern consoles may never come to fruition. This fan-made remaster may be your best bet for playing them for the time being.
