Few could have predicted just how continually successful the multiplayer elements of GTA V would be for Rockstar Games, generating billions of dollars and keeping the game relevant for over a decade.
That said, it's important to remember just how profoundly impactful the single-player story and mode was, and it was that element which served as the defining experience for many in the first instance.
All of that in mind, it's little wonder that the conversation has now turned to GTA VI, with the sequel set to release in May 2026, and it seems fans may be much more united in what they want to see than you might first expect.

The GTA 6 sory is the key to success
Over on Reddit, one user took to the GTA forums to ask the hordes of fans whether they are more concerned about the upcoming game's story, or multiplayer modes and online gameplay.

The responses were remarkably united, considering the usual state of online discourse, with almost all of them saying just how much they can't wait to work through the game's narrative.
"I’m currently replaying GTA V story mode for the first time in years (probably 6+ years), and first time on PS5 and man I’m blown away of how good it looks and how good the story is. I’m a little biased cause I watched Heat for the first time last week and forgot the game’s story was basically Heat meats The Italian Job. Can’t wait to see what 6 cooks up," one comment read.
"Come on now. No one watched the trailers and thought of online first. Both trailers were all story mode," another added.
Now that's not to say you shouldn't be excited for the online element of the experience, and I'm not here to dampen your mood, but those who are saying the story should take precedent are absolutely right, at least in the first instance.

In GTA historically, the story very much is the game, and it serves as the defining experience that it will be judged on when it does release. As such, all of the proverbial eggs have to go in that basket, before people have managed to complete it several times over.
In fairness to Rockstar, it does seem like that's absolutely their priority as well, with all of the promotional material we've seen so far related to the single-player story. Once all is said and done, the developer is well within their rights to go all in on multiplayer, just so they can fund GTA 7 if nothing else.
Hopefully, the online modes won't release until some time after the game itself, so that the story which they have spent so much time putting together can be experienced as intended. If people skip straight to the multiplayer, it will be a huge shame.
