GTA 6 framerate is dividing fans: 'I'm not playing'

To be fair, 30 frames per second does sound a little bonkers in 2026

The Grand Theft Auto VI fan base is, once again, divided, following a report that states Rockstar Games’ upcoming game may run at 30 frames-per-second.

Following the release of Grand Theft Auto VI’s second trailer, the team at Digital Foundry released a deep dive article that explored its technical limitations.

Unfortunately, they came to a pretty upsetting conclusion; Grand Theft Auto VI probably won’t run at 60fps on current generation hardware.

“You could certainly imagine a world where Rockstar adds in a 60fps mode that still runs at 30fps during cutscenes to keep fidelity high, but it's hard to imagine a 60fps mode that also includes the RTGI and RT reflections that lends the game world its realistic look”, Digital Foundry’s Will Judd revealed.

“At that point, the game world would look so dramatically different - and require so much additional work to recreate the lighting and reflections using rasterised techniques - that it scarcely seems believable.”

So, how does the the r/GTA6 community feel about all this?

Well, they’re either still ridiculously hyped, or comfortable waiting for it to release on a system powerful enough to actually handle 60 frames-per-second.

“Most games come with fidelity and performance so I’m hoping it’s the same here not looking forward to playing at 30 again but odds are I’m still buying it”, commented user wfc_godz.

“just wait for pc,” replied user Ok_Reception_8361.

“i basically never play on console these days mainly bc 30fps just hurt my eyes and i dont mind waiting at all.”

Now, if you ask me, I’d tell you that the folks over at Digital Foundry know what they’re on about, so I’d very much be inclined to believe them.

However, I would be surprised if Grand Theft Auto VI didn’t launch with some kind of performance mode. Whether or not that means it’ll be able to target 60fps on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X is something we’ll have to find out down the line.
