Grand Theft Auto VI is going to be the biggest open-world Rockstar Games has crafted yet, so those first few hours of exploration will either make or break the game.

Now that may sound like I think GTA VI could fail. I don’t. It’ll be a hit whatever happens considering we’ve been waiting for it so long.

The open-world is a small concern though because while Red Dead Redemption 2 had its period setting to lean back on, GTA VI has few excuses to have the majority of its map be barren fields and mountains. It was one of the biggest complaints with Grand Theft Auto V’s world and I’m hoping Rockstar has gone above-and-beyond this time around.

Main Story of Free Roam? That's What Players Are Debating

Anyway, those first three hours are something gamers have been thinking a lot about as once the prologue is out of the way, it’d be very tempting to hop in the next available vehicle and see the whole map at once, but some players have a different approach in mind, and it’s one I’ll be adopting for my playthrough too.

In the first three hours, some players have said they’ll be “letting the missions introduce me to new locations".

"Been waiting for this game too long to explore everything as quickly as possible. I'm taking my sweet time on the first playthrough," said one Reddit user.

Another gamer’s strategy followed the same thinking but with a slight twist: “I just let the game introduce me to the areas, but I’ll always visit the tallest landmark in the game first as tradition.”

One comment I particularly liked read, “First three hours, I won't even be able to see the screen because of the tears in my eyes.”

My approach will be something similar to all the others. I’m going to progress the story and see where it takes me but once I’m in a new area, I’ll wait for an opportunity to explore in-between missions.

Once all major areas have been discovered, I’ll then start to explore the more rural locations, like any mountains or nature reserves that might be nearby.

There’s only one exception. I want to take a boat into the ocean as soon as possible and see how far out I can get. I want to see what the limit is and when I do, I want to see if there’s any funny repercussions or Easter eggs for going so far out.
