GTA 6 expected to make $1 billion in its first week

GTA VI is expected to make $1 billion in its first week of launch, but are we all that surprised?

There is no question that Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto franchise is one of the most popular within the video game industry. In fact, it’s one of the most profitable franchises across all forms of media including TV and movies.

According to Mobilemarketingreads.com, as of February 2023, GTA V alone had sold over 175 million units worldwide, and that’s not even taking into account previous entities in the series. What’s more, within its first three days of sale, GTA V had made a reported $1 billion in sales.

So with all that in mind, it should come as no surprise that GTA VI would repeat much of the same success as its predecessor. As reported by PSU.com (via TweakTown), industry analyst Joost Van Dreunen believes that GTA VI will shift 25 million units at release which could result in big sales figures for publisher Take-Two Interactive.

However, despite the high anticipation of GTA VI, it still might be an uphill task to topple the success of GTA V during its launch. After all, GTA V initially launched in 2013 around six to seven years after the Xbox 360 and PS3, respectively.

If rumours are to be believed, GTA VI will be released for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S sometime between 2024 to 2025, which would roughly be four to five years after the launch of the latest generation of consoles. If so, it means that GTA V would have a two to three-year advantage over GTA VI, thus potentially generating more sales at launch. Of course, that is mere speculation on my part.

Either way, in the long run, we have little doubt that GTA VI will be making Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive a lot of real-world money and could eventually surpass its predecessor, especially with its new-gen version of GTA Online being the lucrative cash cow that it is.

Unfortunately, at this time, despite Rockstar Games announcing over a year ago that it has started development on the next entry in the ever-popular series, we’ve still not seen any official gameplay, let alone a release date. At the time of writing, we’ve had to make do with rumours as well as the leaked GTA VI gameplay footage taken from a very early build.

Hopefully, Rockstar Games will put us all out of our misery soon by revealing a gameplay trailer and perhaps even that elusive release date in the coming months.
