The Witcher III: Wild Hunt’s Gwent is widely regarded as one of the best minigames to ever grace a AAA release, but Star Wars might just have it beat.
Last year Ubisoft released Star Wars Outlaws, a game set in the galaxy far, far away that chose to drop the lightsabers and otherworldly force abilities to fully embrace a scoundrel’s life.
Reception to the game was mixed but regardless of your opinion on Kay Vess and the oddly attractive ND-5 you can’t deny that the Sabacc minigame wasn’t ace... It’s now playable as a free, standalone game.
The Sabacc minigame in Star Wars Outlaws can only be played with NPCs but if you want to take your skills online Holocard Cantina is the game for you.
It’s a free game available on Android and iOS devices and supports both single-player and multiplayer rooms.

For the uninitiated Sabacc is Star Wars’ answer to Poker, where players take turns drawing and playing cards of the lowest possible value.
There are some wild cards thrown in to keep things interesting but the gist of the game is rather simple, and it’s ludicrously fun. The bulk of my Star Wars Outlaws playthrough was Kay bouncing between Sabacc tables and defeating their best player.
While Ubisoft later added a Sabacc DLC starring Lando Calrissian it never became its own spin-off, unlike The Witcher series’ Gwent.

Both minigames have their merits but we’d argue that Sabacc is the more casual-friendly experience, and has a slightly wider appeal given that there are more Star Wars fans than there are Witcher fans.
You can download Holocard Cantina on your phone or tablet device now and play for free, perfect for those who seek a greater challenge after tabling every NPC in Star Wars Outlaws.
If you’re on the hunt for some other Star Wars freebies you’ve come to the right place, and you’re looking at the right time.
Recently Star Wars resparked its collaboration with the battle-royale game Fortnite, and promoted several new game modes created by fans.
You’ve got your Star Wars Battlefront successors of course, lightsaber battle arenas and the increasingly popular Droid Tycoon.
One we’d highly recommend though is Escape From Vader. It’s exactly what it says on the tin: a group of players find themselves on an Imperial Star Destroyer and must complete tasks while being hunted by Darth Vader. It’s heavily-inspired by games like Alien: Isolation and Dead By Daylight, and it’s screaming for a AAA release.
