Fallout: New Vegas players will soon be able to play the game with their friends, thanks to a new multiplayer mode coming later this year.

New Vegas: Online is a new multiplayer mod announced for Fallout: New Vegas which aims to add online MMO-like features to the 2010 game.

This new mod is separate from NV:MP, a multiplayer project for the game that has been going since 2015. While NV:MP also has its own MMO-like system, New Vegas: Online will also aim to provide you with a fun multiplayer experience.

While details are light, the mod will supposedly let you explore the New Vegas map with other players, with features such as combat, trading, and levelling up included in the release.

New Vegas: Online to launch this summer

Before you get too excited, while New Vegas: Online will have cooperative elements, we don’t think it’ll include a full co-op campaign where you can play through the game’s story with other players.

We’re prepared to be proven wrong with this, but NV:MP also features a lot of bugs like NPCs being desynchronised between players, as well as quests and items not being shared easily. It’s also prone to crashes.

Similarly, the New Vegas: Online team says that co-op is planned for post-release, but it’s currently focused on getting the core gameplay features done first.

At the moment, the project is about 60% complete according to the team, which is apparently stable enough for a beta playtest which will be launching later in the summer.

The team is aiming to release the beta “before the end of this summer”, or in September or October if these plans don’t work out.

In terms of the features which have already been completed, the New Vegas: Online team says that player synchronisation, drop sync, and NPC sync is done. Some essential gameplay features like a stable combat system, different factions, and an in-game chat have also been added.

While Fallout has primarily been a single-player franchise, the success of games like Fallout 76 proves that the concept can also work in a multiplayer environment.

We wouldn’t be surprised to see more projects like this cropping up over the next few years as players grow hungry for new Fallout experiences.

New Fallout projects are confirmed to be on the way

Earlier this month, Bethesda announced it had started work on remasters for Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. It was also reported that Fallout 5 was in development, with New Vegas studio Obsidian Entertainment collaborating with Bethesda on a Fallout project.

The news came following reported layoffs at Microsoft, including at several studios under Bethesda. Studios like id Software, Zenimax Online Studios and Bethesda Softworks have been affected by these redundancies.

Meanwhile, Bethesda also provided updates on Starfield and The Elder Scrolls franchises, confirming further investment in both IPs.
