Fallout 5 is quite a few years out at the very least, but teases can apparently be found within Fallout 4.
While not being connected in the traditional sense, the Fallout games all share the same world, which is why the Brotherhood of Steel always seems to have a hidden base somewhere and you’ll occasionally hear a murmuring of another game’s setting or events.
In Fallout 3, there’s a line of dialogue that you could easily overlook, but sets up the main conflict found in Fallout 4.
At one point in the story, Dr Zimmer talks about The Commonwealth and how it’s just as war-torn as the rest of the planet, even name-dropping the Institute years before it became an actual thing in the following Fallout game.

It’s for this reason that Fallout fans are convinced the setting for the next game is hidden somewhere in Fallout 4.

“What side characters from Fallout 4 are telling us where Fallout 5 is going to be?” asked Resident-Werewolf-46 in one of the game’s threads, with plenty of other commenters throwing their two cents into the discussion.
One player theorised the next game will be set in San Francisco, a setting found in Fallout 2, and one Kellogg mentions during one of your encounters with him.

Yes we’ve already been there but that doesn’t mean it’s ruled out entirely, especially considering it’ll look very different in 3D.
Others suggested the next game could be set in Detroit, as Detroit steel is apparently what Liberty Prime is made of and yet we haven’t been there yet. It’d also open up the possibility of more Brotherhood of Steel stories.
What About Los Angeles?
One obvious location for a future Fallout game is Los Angeles, though canonically it’d be a tricky location to adapt.

The Fallout TV series is set in L.A and we learn early into the series that the locals know all about Vault-Dwellers, implying Lucy isn’t the first one to go wandering through the wasteland, at least in this part of the world.
Lucy is from Vault 33 so we can probably rule that out as a starting point, but the neighbouring vaults could work.
There’s also Vault 4, which Lucy and Maximus fall into after a run-in with The Ghoul, with additional vaults nearby that could all serve as the start of a new game.
We’ve got a long time to work on our theories as Fallout 5 isn’t coming out anytime soon...
