Fallout TV fans have devised a new theory regarding a key character in Season 2, and we’re not sure what to think about this.
If you cast your mind back to Fallout Season 1, you may remember that several characters appeared between the pre-war flashbacks and the post-war present.
Most notably, Cooper Howard (Walton Goggins) and Hank MacLean (Kyle MacLachlan) are revealed as major survivors of the Great War, with the latter entering cryogenic sleep for over 200 years, and the former being hit with a lot of radiation to turn him into a ghoul.
Another character that mysteriously survived the war and lived for another 200 years is Lee Moldaver (Sarita Choudhury), a former nuclear scientist who had spent her life researching cold fusion.

Moldaver appears in both the pre-war flashbacks and the present day of the show, but it isn’t explained how she survived the jump between both timelines. She’s obviously not a ghoul, but it may also be a bit of a cop out to point to cryogenic sleep as the reason for her survival.
I’m sure this’ll be explained in Season 2 (or beyond). Although the character died at the end of the first season, she may still appear in the flashback scenes.
For now though, fans have concocted a wild theory that claims there’s more to Moldaver’s survival than we previously thought.
As posted on the Fallout Reddit page, one fan reckons that Moldaver as seen in the post-war is actually a synth, while the version of her seen in the flashbacks is her human original.

“My hot take. The original human is long dead. She is a synth based off the original personality brought back by some force specifically to antagonize Vault Tech,” reads a comment from user JimmyBisMe.

Could Moldaver be a synth?
In the lore, synths are androids which can appear to be human-like in appearance and mannerisms. They first appeared in Fallout 3, appearing in the “The Replicated Man” side quest. They took a more prominent role in Fallout 4.

As synths are basically just robots, it means they can withstand aging and can simply be replicated should they meet their demise.
It could mean that the Moldaver of the post-apocalypse has a likeness that was simply based on the same character from the pre-war era.
The main hole in this theory is that synths originate from The Institute in Boston, so it’d be pretty weird for a synth to be made resembling a pre-war scientist and send them due west with the intention of destabilising California.
Still, it wouldn’t be the wildest plot twist in Fallout history if that ended up being the case. And considering how popular Fallout 4 has become in the ten years since launch, I’d imagine that Amazon might want to find more ways to tie in the show and the games.
