Fallout 4 Player Unearths Handy Mechanic After 1000 Hours

Take to the skies

Fallout 4 was one of the more divisive entries in the post-apocalyptic series since it went all 3D on us, but it is filled with small details and useful mechanics that do set it above its predecessors when it comes to quality-of-life for the player.

Outside of major features like settlement building and deeper crafting systems than we'd seen up to that point, there were plenty of smaller alterations that really made the difference (even if you did have to occasionally wade through a river of bugs to find them).

Over on Reddit, a player with 1000 hours inside Fallout 4 discovered a mechanic relating to the game's flying Vertibird vehicles that many of you may have missed on your playthroughs.

Essentially, they found out you can use the Vertibird as a slightly slower form of fast travel, where you can fly to places that you have been before. The cool part is that you can also sit on the minigun whilst flying around in order to wreak havoc on super mutants and deathclaws from above.

It's not the only "hidden" travel system in the game either, as one helpful response pointed out, "If you stay in good graces with the Institute (as in use them until you're ready to betray them), you can fast travel anywhere by going to the Institute first and then your destination. I do really enjoy the Vertibird, it feels really immersive. Plus someone has to mini-gun all these cars."

In even cooler news, the Institute teleporter has the added bonus of not advancing time when you use it to get to your destination. That means that it's a lot easier to be somewhere for a specific time if you need to during a quest, and it also helps you to avoid those particularly dangerous creatures who are more regularly found, or significantly stronger, at night.

If you're playing over on PC, there are a ton of mods that allow you to take your Vertibird experience to the next level. Flyable Personal Vertibird is probably the most revolutionary, offering manual flying controls via WASD that really makes the craft your own.

Equally, there are several Verticall mods that add Vertibird consoles to key areas in the game, allowing you to use it as a travel vehicle from more locations, including the deck of the Prydwyn, the Cambridge PD Headquarters and even Milton General, if you find yourself searching for more immersion.
