Given that Todd Howard took the bold step of announcing The Elder Scrolls VI all the way back in 2018 at the now defunct E3, you would be well within your rights to think that we would likely have heard more by now.
Unfortunately, that absolutely hasn't been the case and the developer has remained remarkably tight-lipped about the project, with information about setting, story or timeline all firmly under lock and key at the time of writing.
With all of the hubbub around Fallout at the moment, exacerbated by the arrival of the second season of the Prime Video series, Elder Scrolls fans are likely feeling a little left by the wayside, with nothing to go on about when they might finally see more of the next mainline release in the legendary RPG series.
That said, there are rumblings and rumours about potential news coming over the next few months, as well as a general feeling that things are dialling up as we head into 2026.
The Elder Scrolls VI May Not Arrive Until 2029

Advert
As first reported by ComicBook, we have received some more news about a potential release date for The Elder Scrolls VI, and it isn't good if you are hoping to play in the next couple of years.
YouTuber and reliable leaker Reece Reilly shared some information that he claims comes from within Bethesda, specifically claiming that the developer has set an internal release date of 2028, though there is also a strong chance that it could be pushed even further into 2029.
“You are not seeing Elder Scrolls VI till 2028 at the earliest, but there’s a high probability that it comes out in 2029,” the insider claimed. “They aren’t giving a rough date cause, quite frankly, it will do more harm than good, especially after announcing this game too early. Personally, at this stage, I believe it’s going to suffer Metroid Prime 4’s fate. Will sell well but won’t get critical acclaim and be divisive.”
There is certainly a considerable amount of risk in the approach that Bethesda has chosen to take with The Elder Scrolls VI, with anticipation now at the point where community sentiment has actively turned towards frustration and anger, rather than excitement.
Fallout fans likely won't be too pleased with this information either given that Todd Howard has previously claimed that we won't be seeing the next game in that series until after The Elder Scrolls VI has released.
