Bethesda has announced a surprise Skyrim update for The Elder Scrolls V, giving fans a fresh reason to return to the fantasy RPG while they wait for The Elder Scrolls VI. The unexpected Skyrim update could keep players busy as anticipation builds for Bethesda's long-awaited Elder Scrolls game.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim remains one of the most popular video games of all time, which explains why Bethesda has continued to bring its beloved open-world RPG to almost every major console generation since its original release on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011.
The latest version of Skyrim is available on Nintendo Switch 2, which launched in December 2025 and delivers one of the best portable versions of Bethesda's fantasy RPG outside of the Steam Deck. Now, Bethesda is set to improve Skyrim across multiple platforms once more, ensuring players continue to get the best experience possible when adventuring in Tamriel.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim gets a surprise update today
“On Thursday, August 20, we will deploy a patch to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition that will increase console mod storage limits and bring more Creations improvements,” tweeted Bethesda.
“While this update should not affect load orders, we do encourage players to log into your save game if you haven't done so in a while as a precaution.”

Skyrim update: Here's what the community is saying
“I hope this doesn't break giant mod lists like LoreRim; the console changes are fantastic,” replied SynthPotato.
Advert
“Set your Skyrim on Steam to only update when launched; you start LoreRim through SKSE, so it won’t trigger the update!” recommended aidlambv2 when replying to SynthPotato.
“I just downloaded Gate To Sovngarde and my day is ruined because downloading takes a lot of time in my area. Now I need to wait until it is patched. Just update consoles and leave the rest alone,” exclaimed promeathana.
It does seem that the vast majority of users are concerned that this latest update might break existing mods, and that’s understandable. After all, as much as we love Bethesda games, it’s not like they don’t have a history of breaking games when a new update is initially launched. Hopefully, history won’t repeat itself here.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is available on just about every platform imaginable, including PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. It’s also currently included with Xbox Game Pass, as well as PS Plus Extra and Premium.
