Detective Pikachu 2 has finally been officially confirmed and looks to have a change of director from the original movie.

Released in 2019 and directed by Rob Letterman, the Detective Pikachu live-action movie was inspired by its Nintendo 3DS counterpart. It also starred Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu (kind of) and Justice Smith as his trainer (kind of).

While not a great movie, I think it's fair to say that Detective Pikachu 2 is one of the better video game adaptations and it generated a decent $433 million at the box office with a reported budget of $150 million. However, despite its moderate success, some fans had grown concerned that we might not ever get a sequel.

Alas, four years on from the first movie’s release, fans can now rest assured that Detective Pikachu 2 is finally on the way. Happy days.

Following on from rumours that were circulating in February, in an exclusive report by Deadline, negotiations are currently taking place by Legendary Entertainment to have Jonathan Krisel (Portlandia) direct the sequel. Furthermore, it is also reported that Chris Galletta (The Kings of Summer) will write the script.

At the time of writing, it’s not been confirmed whether Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) or Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) will reprise their roles in the sequel. However, without giving anything away, it would be a little strange if there wasn't some form of continuation of its story from the original movie into the sequel.

Furthermore, considering that the Pokeball has only begun to roll, it will be safe to assume that the release of Detective Pikachu 2 in cinemas might arrive for at least two to three years.

However, before that time arrives, it would be nice to finally have the Detective Pikachu sequel on Nintendo Switch. Back in September 2022, Nintendo Life reported that the sequel was nearing its completion, that’s at least according to details revealed on a developer's LinkedIn page.
