Good news Pokémon fans, it seems that we might finally be getting Detective Pikachu 2, according to a recent data leak.

The 2019 movie Detective Pikachu is inspired by the game of the same name that was released in Japan in 2016 on the Nintendo 3DS, before arriving in the West. While it’s not considered the greatest movie of all time with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 68% from critics and 79% from the audience, Detective Pikachu is at least a fun popcorn movie.

“Ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son, Tim, to find out what happened,” reads the synopsis of the movie. “Aiding in the investigation is Harry's former Pokémon partner, wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth Detective Pikachu.”

“Finding that they are uniquely equipped to work together, as Tim is the only human who can talk with Pikachu, they join forces to unravel the tangled mystery.”

Pokémon fans have been eager for a movie sequel to Detective Pikachu and those calls were answered in 2023 when production company Legendary Entertainment officially confirmed that it was in development.

It was also reported that Detective Pikachu 2 will be directed by Jonathan Krisel and not Rob Letterman who was in charge of the 2019 production. However, plot details on the sequel have remained vague.

With the apparent lack of details since the news in 2023, some fans have become concerned that Detective Pikachu 2 has been cancelled. Yet, as reported by Comicbook.com (via CentroLeaks) according to a recent Game Freak data breach, the sequel has reportedly been in production since 2021.

If those reports are true and Detective Pikachu 2 has been in production since 2021, I’d like to think that neither Nintendo, The Pokémon Company nor Legendary Pictures would want to throw at least three years of hard work down the drain.

What’s more, Detective Pikachu did turn a profit making a reported $433 million at the box office from its budget of $150 million and if we know one thing about this world, it’s money talks.

Still, we should take all rumours with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise but hopefully, we’ll get an official update on the progress of Detective Pikachu 2 soon. We’ll keep you posted when that information drops.
