In this day and age, it’s certainly not uncommon for popular video games of yesteryear to be remastered or even remade. After all, fans cannot get enough nostalgia from beloved classics.

In 2010, the action-adventure game Dante’s Inferno was released for PSP, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. This is a gruesome game set in the fires of hell and inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy which tells the tale of the Nine Circles of Hell.

Dante’s Inferno was developed by the now-defunct Visceral Games, the original developers of the Dead Space series. So you know if there was going to be a gruesome and gory game, there was no better studio at the time than this team of talented developers.

Granted, the reviews of Dante’s Inferno were not great, but it still garnered a respectable 73 from reviewers and 7.7 from users on Metacritic. Yet, there was something special about this God of War alternative that earned a legion of loyal fans.

Following the release of Dante’s Inferno in a somewhat unlucky 13 years ago, there were rumblings of a sequel but obviously those rumblings never came to fruition. As such, fans have been calling for a sequel for over a decade and if that day may never come, some are at least hoping for a modern-day remake or remaster.

“Remake for Dante's Inferno?” exclaimed Redditor GrosDOUDOU37000 opening up the discussion on the thread. “Since the remake of Dead Space is under development by Motive Studios [which has since released in January 2023] and published by Electronic Arts, following the closure of Visceral Games in October 2017, should Motive and EA create a remake of Dante's Inferno?”

As we now know, the Dead Space remake proved to be a massive success when it launched earlier this year and it seems that remakes of the sequels are already underway. However, if Electronic Arts were to also commission a remake of Dante’s Inferno, it would surely be a welcomed announcement for fans.

“It is very likely that EA might be planning a Dante's Inferno remake since it did say there was one unannounced remake [...] and I'm willing to think that it might just be Dante's Inferno since the Dead Space remake is now a thing,” speculated MarounAka-Kratos. “Then knowing that EA really likes money, if the game has enough sales, we might just have a Dante's Inferno sequel.”

“I don't want a remake, but rather a remaster that contains all DLC, and features both the single player and multiplayer modes,” said Cobraregala2013. I like that idea too, though if we were ever to get a remake of Dante’s Inferno, I would imagine that much like The Last of Us Part I and the recent Red Dead Redemption port, multiplayer would likely be cut from the game.

Back in August this year, Electronic Arts announced that it was shutting down the online servers for Dante’s Inferno and Dead Space 2 this December. Reading between the lines, this could just be a cost-cutting strategy. However, if I were to be a little optimistic, I’d like to think that those servers were shut down to potentially push fans towards unannounced remakes.

Whether Dante’s Inferno will ever get a remake or remaster remains to be seen, though we wouldn't recommend holding your breath. That being said, while Dante’s Inferno isn't available via PS Plus at the time of writing, it is at least backwards compatible with Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One. What’s more, it’s still available to purchase digitally via the Xbox Marketplace and often appears in discounted sales.
