Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a massive free update, featuring tons of new gameplay mechanics

Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a massive free update, featuring tons of new gameplay mechanics - no strings attached.

This very second, Geoff Keighley is on stage in Germany presenting Opening Night Live which can only mean one thing: Gamescom is officially underway.

We knew that we were due an update on Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty during the showcase - and it’s finally arrived. Allow me to bring you up to speed first (I promise this won’t take long). Phantom Liberty is set to release on 26 September, which means we have just over one month to wait. In addition to marking the return of Keanu Reeves’ Johnny Silverhand, we’ll also be introduced to Idris Elba’s brooding Solomon Reed. Phantom Liberty is playable throughout Gamescom, so head on over to CD Projekt RED’s booth if you’re on the showfloor. The expansion is set to bring back a beloved character, and will introduce a number of quality of life changes to the base game - including the introduction of vehicular combat. At tonight’s showcase though, we got a closer look at some of the new gameplay mechanics.

Take a look the brand new trailer below.

The shiny new trailer showcased the redesigned cyberware, redesigned perks, new relic skill tree, revamped police, new vehicles, new vehicular combat, a new district, ‘dozens’ of new missions, mounted weaponry, an increased level cap, and there’ll be ‘endless dynamic events’. Overhauled combat AI was also teased so you can deflect bullets with your katana, or yeet enemies to infinity and beyond with your foot. All in all, it sounds like there’s plenty to keep players busy and entertained.

While the new district and missions are unique to Phantom Liberty (a paid expansion), CD Projekt RED confirmed that all of the other updates will be coming to the base Cyberpunk 2077 game totally for free, for PC and consoles in the aptly titled Update 2.0. How good is that?

Curious to know what Phantom Liberty is about? The synopsis reads as follows: “When the orbital shuttle of the President of the New United States of America is shot down over the deadliest district of Night City, there's only one person who can save her - you. Become V, a cyberpunk for hire, and dive deep into a tangled web of espionage and political intrigue, unraveling a story that connects the highest echelons of power with the brutal world of black-market mercenaries.”

The expansion is said to also include new romances for V, and a new story ending. We cannot wait to dive in.
