Ben Stiller cast as Kratos in cursed God of War trailer

The latest trailer for God of War: Ragnarök is very bizarre, and sees Ben Stiller as Kratos leading a family support group session.

It’s officially one week to go until the release of God of War: Ragnarök. That is, assuming Sony didn’t accidentally send it to you early. Ragnarök easily one of the year’s most anticipated games - the marketing team could probably just put out a one-second video of Kratos shouting “boy” and everyone would still buy it.

Maybe it’s for this reason that the real marketing team has decided to get a bit, uh, creative with the most recent trailer. As reported by Entertainment Weekly, the ad sees Ben Stiller (Zoolander) dressed up as Kratos, leading a support group session alongside his son with John Travolta (Pulp Fiction), basketball legend LeBron James, and their kids - comparing parent-child relationships to the events of the God of War series. And yes, it’s as strange as it sounds.

Take a look at Ben Stiller as Kratos in the latest cursed trailer for Ragnarök right here.

“I have to say trying to make LeBron James laugh was fun - and he loves to improv also,” Stiller told Entertainment Weekly, explaining that the stars had done a bit of improv during the filming of the trailer. “So he was making me laugh too. There was a bit about his headband he came up with and since we don't really know each other, and I didn't know his sense of humour, it was fun to see that he enjoyed that and played off it. Felt the same with John Travolta - both iconic figures - and John really plays in the moment. It was great to have a chance to act with him, since I have been a fan forever.”

James added that he doesn’t think he’s ever laughed so hard on set: “I can relate to Kratos in a lot of ways, especially in this father-son narrative. You try to be confident and strong and make it seem like you have it all figured out, but in reality, you're just doing your best and learning as you go,” he said. “With Bronny being my oldest, he's taught me so much about fatherhood and about myself. It was great to have a little fun with that dynamic here.”

God of War: Ragnarök is set to release on 9 November.
