Battlefield Developer DICE Says It's Done With Games Like 'Mirror's Edge'

DICE will solely be focusing on the Battlefield franchise, despite Battlefield 2042's issues.

DICE has developed some incredible games over the years but in recent months, the studio has been plagued by the ongoing Battlefield 2042 saga. In case you missed it, Battlefield 2042 was ridden with bugs and glitches upon release and the game is still experiencing issues seven months later.

Most of the initial bugs have been ironed out but new problems have arisen in their place. One such glitch posed a particular danger to those who suffer from seizures and strangely, DICE decided to remove both the 128-player Breakthrough and Hazard Zone modes. There’s not a lot to lure in new players, yet you shouldn’t expect DICE to focus on anything else anytime soon.

In an attempt to save the game, DICE have released Battlefield 2042’s very first season. Take a look at what you can expect from ‘Zero Hour’ below.

During a recent interview with GamesIndustry.Biz, DICE’s general manager Rebecka Coutaz confirmed that previous success stories for the studio - like Mirror’s Edge - are currently on the backburner as DICE is fully committed to the Battlefield franchise.

Coutaz explained, “We are only focusing on Battlefield 2042. There is no time for anything else and this is what we want to do. In three years, we want to be the first-person shooter powerhouse that DICE deserves to be, and that is what we're going for."

Released in 2008, Mirror’s Edge is a platforming action-adventure that was available on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and later on Microsoft Windows. In recent years, the game has developed a cult-like following with growing demand for a remaster or reboot of the series.

Given what DICE have said, it certainly doesn’t sound like that’s even a possibility in the current landscape. One fan recently put together an incredible project showing what a Mirror’s Edge remake could look like in Unreal Engine 5 and the result was everything I hoped for and more. Alas, we’ll have to settle for more Battlefield. DICE must be confident that they haven’t alienated every Battlefield fan.
