The Assassin’s Creed series is at a bit of an odd point right now, as Ubisoft keeps their cards close to their chest about what exactly they would like to do next with their biggest and best IP.
There are plenty of rumours floating around that the developer is going to shadow drop Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag at some point in the next few months, but the mainline series’ future is a little more up in the air.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows has certainly been a notable success for the company, selling very well and serving as one of the most played single-player games of the last few years on this current generation of consoles.
Talk of what comes next is now abound, with Ubsioft confirming that Shadows won’t receive any major story DLC from here on out, restricting it to just one release in that department. Interestingly, one of the game’s features has been sitting there all along and it could play a big part in what’s to come.

Assassin’s Creed Hexe Will Likely Feature the Animus Hub
One of the most interesting dynamics in the earlier Assassin’s Creed games was that dichotomy between the story taking place in both the present day and the past (via the Animus).
Though it has perhaps strayed over the years. it should still be a part of the overall picture. In Shadows, that has started a new direction known as the Animus Hub, which is meant to lay out the modern story connections in subsequent games (as and when they get here).
In an interview with GamesRadar+, associate game director at Ubisoft Quebec Simon Lemay-Comtois shared the following about the developer's intentions for the system.
"It's the one thing that will keep going in time. Things that are set up in Shadows should keep happening in other projects and evolve and move forward. I cannot say much beyond that, but if you think of Shadows as one thing and Animus Hub as another, the Animus Hub is overlooking future games as well. It's not just a Shadows thing."
It's therefore a reasonable assumption that one of the "future games" he is talking about is the near-mythical Project Hexe. Though we don't know much about it yet, the game is set to take on a much darker tone, with a rumoured setting of the 16th century Holy Roman Empire, with an onrunning theme of witches and their unjust persecution.
Whatever does happen, the Animus Hub is seemingly Ubisoft's way of straightening the course of the modern story, something which it does really need. Fingers crossed it works.
