Ubisoft is in the midst of navigating a rather difficult path that’s come at a stark human cost.

As you’ll likely recall, Ubisoft recently cancelled six major projects including Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time which was ready to ship.

That process has resulted in the displacement of many developers, and this latest round of layoffs is far from the only instance of this we’ve seen from Ubisoft in recent years.

In a bid to get the company back on track, Ubisoft appears to be opting for a ‘back to basics’ approach, streamlining its upcoming output.

It’s seemingly delayed the launch of the rumoured remake of Assassin’s Creed V: Black Flag.

Beyond that, Assassin’s Creed Hexe is set to arrive and by all accounts, it may see fan-favourite Ezio Auditore da Firenze return.

Assassin’s Creed Hexe is reportedly set within Europe during the witch trials orchestrated by the Holy Roman Empire in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Rumours claim that it’ll centre around female protagonist Elsa with Ezio’s sister, Claudia, also possibly returning.

According to Insider Gaming, it looks as if Hexe could become a family affair.

Ezio and Claudia Could Both Return in Assassin’s Creed Hexe

Appearing on the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast, the site’s Tom Henderson revealed that Ezio is expected to appear halfway through the game with the character teaching our protagonist how to be an assassin.

That sounds interesting, although I am somewhat wondering what skills Elsa might possess to get us through the first half of the game if this is the case.

Assassin’s Creed Hexe is supposed to be the darkest entry in the franchise yet. Perhaps Elsa really is a witch and we’ll spend the first half of the game utilising those powers.

Ezio hasn’t surfaced in an Assassin’s Creed game since 2011’s Assassin’s Creed Revelations.

The character lived during the years 1459 to 1524.

The European witch trials featured in Hexe stretched from 1560 to 1630 so technically, there’s no crossover here if we’re being historically accurate.

It’s very important to remember though that Assassin’s Creed Hexe is a work of fiction. Ubisoft could certainly shift the dates of the witch trials forward to crossover with Ezio’s lifespan.

As always, I do have to urge you to take all of this with a pinch of salt until something is confirmed by Ubisoft.

There’s no saying when Hexe might finally surface with a full reveal beyond the game’s title. I’d guess that we’re still several years away from it launching.
