For many Assassin's Creed fans (though I don't include myself in this number), the series peaked with the arrival of the piratical Edward Kenway in seafaring adventure Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
The game took the franchise in a totally different direction after the divisive Assassin's Creed III, bringing in naval battles and a looser association with the eternal war between Templars and Assassins.
It basically nailed almost every element of what it was trying to do, and it's still well worth revisiting and playing again in 2025, even in its original form.
That said, a remake has long been rumoured, with relatively new information claiming that it will actually release in the first quarter of 2026, giving us just a few months to wait.

Adding to that speculation is a new Assassin's Creed Shadows trailer, which many fans think they have spotted a small clue for the remake within.

Black Flag Remake Hint in Assassin's Creed Shadows Trailer
As first reported by Kotaku, fans watching the latest trailer for Assassin's Creed Shadows' upcoming content believe they spotted a pirate ship briefly in the background.

User acinterface was the first to spot what looks like the bow of a ship creeping into the shot, and whilst it is a little tenuous, it does certainly have the appearance of a wooden pirate boat from the right era.
One comment below was quick to agree with the OP, with one saying, "I think you're right. It does look like a ship.
"Your eagle vision is top notch!"
In reality, the ship looks a lot like the ones in the base game, as other comments were keen to point out.

"I hate to be that guy, but it really looks like the ones in the base game đŹ I find it unlikely that these are references to BFR, but we'll see. Either way, nice catch mate!" one said.
"We already got these types of ships in Shadows. I think it's not the BF remake teaser," another added.
Regardless of whether there is actually anything to the little ship appearing in the background of the Shadows trailer, conversation around the Black Flag remake is so loud now that it feels more like an inevitability than a rumour.
It may well be that Ubisoft is taking a leaf out of Bethesda's book and shadow dropping it to generate hype, rather than dropping it well ahead of time.
