For many fans, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is the pinnacle of the popular Ubisoft series.

Originally released in late October 2013 before arriving on other platforms weeks later, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was developed by Ubisoft Montreal and in celebration of its 10th anniversary, the lead writer on the game, Darby McDevitt has surprised fans with a special developer commentary video. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is so beloved by fans, it’s a reason why so many are excited at the prospect of a remake built from the ground up.

Beloved by fans and critics alike, on aggregate websites such as Metacritic, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag scored into the high 80s cementing itself as a series favourite. Set during the 1700s, the Golden Age of Pirates, you play as the charismatic Edward Kenway, who is a: “young, cocky, and fearsome captain. His skill with a sword and disdain for authority earned him the respect of pirate legends like Blackbeard, but thrust him.”

Captured on the PlayStation 5, McDevitt provided commentary on nearly an hour's worth of gameplay giving us valuable insight into the development process of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag from its open sea exploration, its cast of characters to the combat and much more.

Assassin’s Creed fans on both YouTube and Reddit thank Darby McDevitt for his contributions to his role in developing this beloved classic, arguably, the best pirate game of all time. “Darby, my dear friend, your contribution to the lore of this series is undeniable. I am a big fan of your work,” said thegrimreaper990.

“Black Flag means a lot to me. I grew up loving pirates and history. I always come back to it when I have not-so-good days because of how much joy it brings. Even with all the flaws I just shrug the off,” exclaimed HistoryMonarch1999.

“Thank you for your terrific work, Darby! Especially on creating the concept of Sages— I absolutely adore John, Bartholomew, and Germain,” mcgillisfareed rejoiced. “I just recently went back and played through Black Flag. It's probably one of my favourite Assassin’s Creed games of all time,” explained InWaterMrSutherland.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is available now on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
