A Cult Classic Has Returned To Steam After Strange 5 Year Absence

A Cult Classic Has Returned To Steam After Strange 5 Year Absence

Despite an upcoming sequel, the PS3 era EA game has been difficult to buy for several years.

Sony has been making moves on its legacy games for the PlayStation 3 of late. It's been setting up patents for backwards compatibility for PlayStation 5, and withdrawing support for the PlayStation 3. Currently, the only way to access many PS3 games is through the console itself, making it difficult for people to play many classic games. Without its old hardware there is no way to play, and this returning title is one of them.

Due to weird licensing issues with publisher EA, Alice: Madness Returns was removed from Steam five years ago. Alongside Sony's decision to nerf the PS3, it's been a difficult game to get hold of for the last few years. The Alice In Wonderland themed horror platformer was designed by American McGee of DOOM and Quake franchise fame. While Madness Returns shows signs of its age has been widely considered a standout title of the era, it's still worth a play through.

If you want to see some of American McGee's early work, he was one of the designers of DOOM II showcased in the trailer below.

In fact, Madness Returns is so beloved that McGee managed to crowdfund an independent sequel Alice: Asylum which is still in the works. This is why the difficulty of getting the middle, and so far considered best, game in the trilogy was considered such an issue by fans. Many wanted to be able to check out the 2011 game before hopping into the new game.

On his Twitter, McGee thanked 'B' for his one man efforts in getting Madness Returns back on the online storefront. It is also available on Xbox consoles via EA Play or can be purchased outright. However, with Steam Decks slowly making their ways into consumers hands, maybe it's time to play some Alice on the go.

If you want to grab Madness Returns, now is your chance and it's very reasonably priced. Who knows when it will disappear into wonderland once again.
