Do you enjoy RPGs? If the answer to that question is ‘yes’, then I know with certainty that a free RPG is an even more desirable thought.
Well, you can currently get your hands on a free RPG courtesy of Steam, but don’t dilly dally as this one’s only available for free for a limited-time.
The game is Ampersat, developed by Gaterooze and Ink, with publishing assistance from GrabTheGames.
Described as a “shooty, slashy, RPG-y game mixing retro and modern sensibilities”, this one’s got broad appeal.

It even cites The Legend of Zelda as one of its influences and let’s be honest, there are few franchises out there better than that.
Ampersat also incorporates roguelite elements, and features handcrafted animations; it’s a bit of a jack of all trades.
And I should most definitely mention that this has all been put together by a solo dev.
“Ampersat distills some favorite childhood gaming experiences into a fresh, fun hybrid that sees you killing a lot of monsters, finding a lot of loot, freeing captured letters (um, what?) and growing from a world-weary warrior mage into a powerful smashing/blasting machine!” reads the synopsis.

There are more than 50 levels to enjoy, with optional procedural areas available beyond that.
As an RPG, it’s got all of the pillars you’d want and expect, from character progression to upgradeable loot - and there’s even a local co-op mode.
Typically, Ampersat would set you back £7.19 but it’s free until 6pm on 6 July, so you’ve got a couple of days to grab it.
If my description hasn’t quite secured your interest, I’ll allow the game’s players to finish the job.

Ampersat has ‘Positive’ reviews on Steam.
“If you like twin stick shooters, you'll likely enjoy this. The music is enjoyable, the premise is interesting and fairly unique, the art is both simple and elegant,” one player wrote.
“Ampersat is a retro-inspired action-RPG where you play as an “@” battling through ASCII-style levels. With twin-stick combat, RPG upgrades, and charming visuals, it’s creative and nostalgic,” added another.
“Got it for free, but it's pretty fun,” read one short and simple summary.
