Amazon has officially recast Kratos for its upcoming God of War live-action series on Prime Video, with the new actor set to follow in the footsteps of Ryan Hurst, who previously portrayed the iconic Spartan warrior during a small period of filming.
The live-action God of War series has been a long time coming, with Amazon officially announcing the Prime Video adaptation in May 2022. Ryan Hurst was eventually cast as the Ghost of Sparta in January 2026. The Sons of Anarchy star was no stranger to the franchise, having previously played Thor in God of War Ragnarök.

Unfortunately for Ryan Hurst, the actor was reportedly injured on set, suffering from a torn bicep while filming scenes for the God of War TV series. Rather than delaying production until Hurst recovered, Amazon quickly began recasting Kratos.

As reported by Variety, the role will be played by WWE legend and Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista, a casting choice that fans have been speculating about on social media for some time.

God of War fans react to Dave Bautista's casting
“Between his looks, acting, and the character traits of Marcus [Phoenix], I literally can’t picture a more perfect casting choice,” said Redditor bcegkmqswz.
“Bro better jump on another cycle. But otherwise perfect casting,” added IndependenceOk6046.
“I hope he does Kratos justice, I really, really hope he does,” pleaded botan313.
“I feel really bad for Ryan Hurst. This was an awesome role to land, and from the last pic he posted [on socials], he put in the work. That said...this is probably the casting we all dreamed of when this s*** was announced. Let's go!” said Emotional-Ad8894.
When you look back at Dave Bautista’s WWE career, he was physically huge, with a muscle mountain physique built from years of intense training. His size and presence undoubtedly helped him land the role of Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy, a character that introduced him to a much wider audience.
Bautista is still an imposing figure, but the actor has noticeably leaned down in recent years. Now that he has officially been cast as Kratos in Amazon’s live-action God of War series, it will be interesting to see whether he adds more muscle mass to embody the legendary Spartan warrior. Only time will tell.
Does the God of War series have a release date?
At the time of writing, Amazon has yet to announce a release date for the live-action God of War series on Prime Video.
The series was already likely at least a year or two away from premiering, but production delays caused by Ryan Hurst’s injury and the subsequent search for a new Kratos could have pushed that timeline back even further.
While Amazon has not confirmed an internal delay, it’s reasonable to expect the God of War TV series may now arrive later than originally anticipated. Filming is expected to begin again with none of Hurst's existing content used.
In the meantime, at least we can look forward to the release of God of War Laufey, which will arrive exclusively on the PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2026.
