Former WWE star could be God of War's new Kratos, but it's not Triple H

Amazon's live-action God of War series finds itself in a tight spot, and after reportedly filming four full episodes with Sons of Anarchy's Ryan Hurst taking the lead as Kratos, it could be forced to start from scratch.

While we'll likely never know what's going on behind the scenes and whether any of what's been filmed can be saved (well, it worked for Game of Thrones), the hunt is on for Hurst's replacement after he tore his bicep and required immediate surgery. Importantly, this put Hurst out of action for up to a year, and pushed the studio to move forward with a new Kratos for the upcoming God of War adaptation.

Although there's no official word on who our next Ghost of Sparta will be, one former WWE wrestler has set tongues wagging.

God of War might've found its new Kratos

Whether he's simply championing himself as the next Kratos, or there's more to it, former WWE wrestler Braun Strowman shared a July 18 post of himself in full Kratos getup and captioned it "Just gonna leave this here!!!” alongside the hashtags #ImHim and #Kratos.

The same snap was shared on Instagram, with the former wrestler (real name Adam Scherr) saying he's in much better shape these days. Even though it implies that his Kratos cosplay was little more than a Halloween costume, this isn't where the story ends.

Scherr also posted an apparent Amazon Studios visitor pass from July 15, which conveniently came just days before Hurst's departure was announced.

Going three for three, the beefy wrestler then shared a July 21 workout video where he showed off his current physique and included Kratos' signature line of 'boy'.

Once upon a time, there were calls for fellow former WWE wrestler Paul "Triple H" Levesque to lift the Leviathan Axe, although some argued he's 'too old' for the part as he’s now 56.

At 42, Scherr is considerably younger than that, as well as Hurst being aged 50, so he could be a potential recast to carry the franchise forward.

Then again, would you really be allowed to spoil your involvement in something as big as God of War? We aren't Amazon execs, but much like the inevitable day when the studio finds a new James Bond, we assume the next 007 will have signed NDAs galore.

Giving fans what they want

Even before Hurst landed the role of Kratos, the internet was awash with fan castings. These ranged from Gerard Butler to Dave Bautista, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to Jason Momoa. With us seemingly sticking in the snowy backdrop of Norse mythology from the more recent games, many called for Christopher Judge to reprise his role from 2018's God of War and 2022's God of War Ragnarök.

Back in 2024, we even wrote about some cheering Scherr for the role, although we agreed it should go to Judge.

In response to the idea that Braun Strowman could be flexing his muscles, the jury was out on whether he's the right guy to replace Hurst.

Responding to his latest post, one GoW fan mused: "They need a good actor not just a big dude."

We've got to admit, with a limited filmography that includes playing 'Security Guard' in Deathgasm II: Goremageddon, Scherr might not have Hurst's range.

Another added: "Message for the bald guys with beards, you're not Kratos, someone had to tell you."

Praising this fan casting, someone simply wrote: "You or HHH.”

A fourth concluded: "Might as well give him an audition for the God of War show. He looks the part, and he's a pro wrestler, so he's properly trained on stunts, theatrics, and camera timing. What's the worse [sic] that could happen?"

Whoever is stepping up as Kratos, Amazon doesn't look like it's ready to make it official just yet.
