It has been a little while since we've heard much about the next official Stardew Valley update from developer ConcernedApe and the team, so it only makes sense that we look elsewhere to add some variety to our next game.
Fortunately, the game has one of the most dedicated modding communities that you'll find anywhere and they work tirelessly to ensure there is always something new for players to enjoy.
If you're an animal lover, and dogs specifically, then you might want to look into downloading the Em's Dogs pack over at NexusMods.
Releasing just a few days ago, this mod transforms the game's array of canine companions, adding significant variety with 24 total options, including Marnie's adoption icon.

The dog's are also much higher quality than many of the base textures and appearances in the game, making them look much softer and more realistic looking.
Specifically, the mod adds all of these lovely hounds to Marnie's range of options: Golden Retriever, English Bulldog, German Shepard, Border Collie, Greyhound, Australian Shepard, Jack Russell, Dachshund, Bull Terrier, Cocker spaniel, Beagle, Dalmatian, Borzoi, Pug, Shiba, Bernese, St. Bernard, Chow Chow, Pomeranian, Sharpei, Irish Red Setter, Husky, Rough Collie, Pyrenees.
The mod author has confirmed that they are also planning to update the mod with some exciting new features. including pups and collars, though they are planning to work on other projects first, so it may take a while.
The base game comes with a ton of different animals and livestock to use and there are mods being added all the time that change how they look or work.

K's Style Donkeys does a fairly similar job to the mod above, only this time with the game's resident asses, retexturing them all in game and adding further detail.
There are other mods that add additional chickens and sheep, as well as more exotic animals like flamingoes.
Though they came out a little longer ago, well known modder junimods released several Elle's packs, if you're looking to update most of the livestock and animals in the game in a more uniform fashion.
Outside of that, you'll just have to wait to hear more from The Secret Police Ltd and ConcernedApe about what we can expect from the 1.7 update.

But at least that should be enough to keep us going whilst we wait for the eventual release of the latter's latest project, Haunted Chocolatier.
