Zelda: Ocarina Of Time is the greatest game ever made, according to cold hard science

One dedicated gamer has compiled 14 lists to find out the definitive greatest game of all time.

Well, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time may have just earned the coveted title of the greatest game of all time. Uh oh, I anticipate fierce debate.

I shouldn’t think that anyone would argue that Ocarina of Time is undeserving. It truly is a spectacular game and if you’re yet to play it, I ask you this: Why? Stop what you’re doing and find out what all of the fuss is about. That being said, I’m sure there’s more than a few of us who would argue that another game deserves to pique Ocarina of Time to the title. This ‘definitive’ list has come courtesy of Reddit user scdsco who compiled 14 lists made by various media and industry outlets across the last five years to discover the true best game of all time.

It’s a double whammy for The Legend of Zelda as Breath of the Wild takes second place.

Scdsco explained, “For each list, I gave each game a score based on placement (i.e. one point for 100th place, two points for 99th place, all the way up to 100 points for first place). I also gave a certain amount of extra points for simply being on the list, otherwise games that ranked low would get basically no advantage over games that didn't rank at all. The amount differed based on whether the list was a top 50, top 100, top 200, and so on. Making it onto more exclusive lists obviously grants more points.”

Can we just take a moment to appreciate scdsco’s efforts before we continue? Huge props for the work that went into this little endeavour. The lists compiled to make the master ranking include: Empire (UK, 2023), USA Today (US, 2022), Popular Mechanics (US, 2022), Looper (US, 2022), IGN (international, 2021), Slant (US, 2020), Game Informer (US, 2018), Games TM (UK, 2018), Metacritic top 200 Metascores of all time (as of 2023), IMDB top 200 user ratings of all time (as of 2023), Ranker top 200 user ratings of all time (as of 2023), British GQ Industry Poll (UK, 2023), TV Asahi viewer poll (Japan, 2021), and Hobby Consolas reader poll (Spain/Latin America, 2021).

As mentioned, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time came out on top followed by Breath of the Wild, Grand Theft Auto V, The Last of Us, and Tetris. Resident Evil 4, Metal Gear Solid, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Super Mario 64, and BioShock then rounded out the top 10. If you want to view the whole list, scdsco has ranked 200 games in total.
