Upcoming MCU Disney Plus special is full of gore, says director

Marvel's upcoming special Werewolf By Night includes much more gore than we're used to in the MCU.

If there’s one thing Marvel fans can be sure about, it’s that they’re going to be drowning in content for at least another three years. Back in July, Marvel Studios announced their upcoming release slate which, for now, ends with Avengers: Secret Wars in 2025. Given the immense popularity of the MCU though, I imagine someone is already drawing up plans for Phase Seven.

Let’s bring it back to the present. Marvel fans are currently enjoying the excellent She-Hulk: Attorney At Law over on Disney Plus, and the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever isn’t too far away either. Breaking from tradition though, Marvel are releasing their first special this week - and the highly-anticipated Werewolf By Night is said to be full of gore.

Check out the trailer for Werewolf By Night below.

If you don’t know the premise of Werewolf By Night, the special will follow a secret group of monster hunters as they search for a powerful relic. It’s the first special we’ve seen from Marvel Studios and whilst Werewolf By Night does have continuity with the MCU, it’ll be much bloodier and gorier than we’re used to according to director Michael Giacchino.

Speaking to IGN, Giacchino explained that the inclusion of gory violence was an unspoken given. He said, “Well, it was one of those things where no one said no. I just kept pushing. I knew that we were going to balance that with heart and humor and humanity and empathy and all of that. And as long as we kept that balance in tow that I felt like we had some leeway to push on the horror side.”

Giacchino was heavily inspired by classic monster movies. “We're dealing with monsters, monster movies, and I felt like we needed to just go into that realm, just not be afraid of it. And if that meant, 'Sorry, you're going to have to edit this,' somebody came into my room. And if that meant that we were going to try some new things, we were going to try some new things," he added. The special arrives on Disney Plus on 7 October.
