Star Wars fans have roasted what could have been the franchise's first R-rated movie that was flat-out rejected.

Since its inception in 1977 with Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, the Star Wars franchise has always offered family friendly, sci-fi intergalactic adventures and it’s a formula that has served it well over the years.

That being said, the likes of 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the Disney Plus series Andor provided something a little more mature as an alternative whilst still being safe for children to watch if they choose.

However, as reported by Variety, Marvel’s live-action Deadpool star, Ryan Reynolds, once pitched an R-rated Star Wars production to Disney, but sadly, it was rejected.

When talking on a recent episode of ‘The Box Office’ podcast, Reynolds said, “I pitched to Disney. I said, ‘Why don’t we do an R-rated Star Wars property?' I don’t mean R-rated to be vulgar. R-rated as a Trojan horse for emotion. I always wonder why studios don’t want to just gamble on something like that.”

Reynolds also said that he wouldn't have to star in the R-rated Star Wars production but the actor wanted to instead produce and/or write but was told that it would be a “bad fit”.

“Star Wars doesn't need an R-rated film. Andor already showed that we can do adult stories without explicit language, sexuality, or violence,” said Redditor Observer-of-Ganymede.

“Star Wars doesn’t need an R-rated film. In fact, the rating says nothing about the potential quality one way or another,” exclaimed oldmangonzo.

“The first R-rated Star Wars movie we need is the true Darth Vader galaxy-conquering movie,” suggested BrotherLary247. “I want it and I need it. Show us the missing years in all its true, violent glory.”

Will we ever get an R-rated Star Wars movie? Only time will tell, but in this day and age, nothing really surprises me.
