A movie we thought was never coming but also really wanted is on the way because Donkey from the Shrek movies is finally getting his own starring role. Happy days!

The Shrek movie series began in 2001. Made by DreamWorks Animation, it is loosely based on a children’s book by William Steig of the same name, which is in turn loosely inspired by classic fairy tales and fables. It stars Mike Myers as the ogre Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, and Eddie Murphy as Donkey.

The last movie released in this beloved franchise was Shrek Forever After in 2010, followed by two Puss in Boots spin-offs in 2011 and 2022, respectively. So it’s fair to say that a new Shrek movie is certainly well overdue and fans have been wishing for its return.

Thankfully, in 2023, our wish was granted when it was announced that a new Shrek movie is on the way with it expected to be released sometime in 2025, which just so happens to be the same release year as GTA VI. Now, it looks like we’re going to be treated to more Shrek goodness with Donkey getting his own movie, as reported by Collider.

During an interview promoting the new Netflix movie Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Eddie Murphy not only spoke about the aforementioned fifth Shrek movie but also teased that Donkey is getting a standalone movie. Murphy revealed that the new Shrek movie began production around five months ago and added, “We're gonna do Donkey as well. So we're gonna do a Shrek, and we're doing a Donkey [movie].”

At this time, the unofficially announced Donkey movie doesn't have a release date but hopefully, its launch isn't too far, far away. We’ll keep you posted when we hear further details on the new Shrek and Donkey movies.
