You only need to go back so far in the Marvel comic books to get an idea of the events to come over the next two Avengers films.
We already know that Doctor Doom is finally making his MCU appearance, played by a returning Robert Downey JR., but for those wondering how he’ll become the ‘big bad’ we just need to look at the comic book stories.
If you’re not a comic book reader and don’t want possible story plots spoiled, then look away now.
It’s no secret that the MCU films follow the loose paths laid by the writers of the Marvel Comics classics, and with the next film, Avengers: Doomsday, we could be seeing more of those threads realised.

If you caught the post-credit scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, you’ll have seen Doctor Doom interacting with Franklin Richards. This is key to the possible plot of the film.
Franklin is one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel universe, and it’s looking likely that Doctor Doom will kidnap the youngster to manipulate his powers, creating the incursion events across the MCU.
These events will smash timelines together, and if we’re following the events of the Secret Wars comics, it’s all in the name of unifying the universes and timelines to create one singular universe.
Of course, Doom wants to rule over that singular timeline, and this will need to be prevented with every hero turning up to lay the smack down.

It’s hinted that Doctor Doom will combine all timelines in the next film, leaving the heroes to duke it out with a menagerie of villains in the follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars.
This then brings about the ‘soft reboot’ of the MCU, the introduction of the X-Men, and an end to the multiverse shenanigans of this past saga.
