The franchise started in 2002 with The Bourne Identity and starred Matt Damon as the lead role. It received two sequels, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum before shifting focus to a new character played by Jeremy Renner in The Bourne Legacy. Matt Damon then returned to reprise his role in 2016 with Jason Bourne, which picked up where the series left off with The Bourne Ultimatum.
While details on the new entry are few and far between at the time of writing, it’s believed Universal is negotiating for Edward Berger to direct the next instalment.
This would be Berger’s first involvement with the franchise, as the previous films were directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity), Paul Greengrass, (The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum and Jason Bourne), and Tony Gilroy (The Bourne Legacy).
It’s also currently unknown if Matt Damon is in talks to reprise the role, and whether the new film will act as a sequel, prequel, reboot or spin-off for the franchise. If Damon is down to return, it’ll likely be a sequel, but if a new face takes over it’ll more than likely be some sort of reboot.
