The Witcher 4 Key Plot Point Based On 'Mistake' Says Series Author

This is an important plot detail

The Witcher 4 will have a major plot point based on quite a big mistake, says the author of the novels.

Long before the arrival of Cyberpunk 2077, the developers at CD Projekt RED had already crafted wonderful RPG worlds with The Witcher series, inspired by the Andrzej Sapkowski novels.

Granted, the original game in the series, The Witcher, released in 2007 on PC, has not aged well. It not only looks outdated (understandably so), but it also plays quite sluggishly. So, it’s a good job that The Witcher is getting a remake.

The series most certainly improved with its 2011 sequel, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, but the CDPR franchise was taken to new heights with 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, widely considered to be one of the best fantasy RPGs of all time.

Now, fans are eagerly waiting for the arrival of The Witcher 4, which will star Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon, aka “Lady of Time and Space”, as its main protagonist, instead of Geralt of Rivia.

However, as reported by Eurogamer, Andrzej Sapkowski has pointed out an incorrect plot detail that was picked from a mistake, and has now become a mainstay in the video game series, set to continue in The Witcher 4.

During a Reddit AMA thread, when someone asked Sapkowski about his thoughts on how Witcher schools are portrayed in the games, he replied: “A single sentence about some 'School of the Wolf' mysteriously made its way into The Last Wish.

“I later deemed it unworthy of development and narratively incorrect, even detrimental to the plot. Therefore, later, I never included or referenced any Witcher Gryffindors or Slytherins again. Never.”

“However, that one sentence was enough. Adaptors, particularly video game people, have clung to the idea with remarkable tenacity and have wonderfully multiplied these 'witcher schools'. Completely unnecessary,” he continued.

Sapkowski said that he had considered removing the lines about the Witcher schools in newer editions of The Last Wish, but ultimately decided against it. Instead, he hinted that he might “expand and clarify the matter somehow in subsequent books.”

I suppose, once an important plot detail like this has been out in the wild and adapted in not only video games but also in the Netflix series, it’s quite difficult to fix.

At the time of writing, neither The Witcher remake nor The Witcher 4 has a confirmed release date, but we’ll let you know once that information drops.

As for The Witcher series on Netflix, season four arrives on 25 October, which sees Liam Hemsworth replace Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia for the very first time. That’s going to take some getting used to.
