'The Sandman' JK Rowling Reference Has Really Divided Fans

The Sandman's latest bonus episode included a JK Rowling reference, and fans aren't too sure what it's trying to say.

The Sandman has been a huge hit for Netflix. Just three days after it was released, the series topped the streaming service’s global top 10 list. Last week, Netflix surprised fans with a bonus episode and it looks like a spin-off could already be on the way. That being said, there is one aspect of the show that’s left fans divided.

If you haven’t yet checked out the show, take a look at the trailer for The Sandman below.

Spoiler alert. The rest of this article addresses the plot of last week’s bonus episode. ‘Calliope’ starred Arthur Darvill as fictional author Richard Madoc. In one scene, Madoc is attending his book launch with his agent Larry (Kevin Harvey) claiming that “every major studio wants a piece,” of the project adding that Madoc will work with “whoever lets him write and direct” the film adaptation of his novel. A character then replies, “They won’t even let Jo Rowling write and direct,” before Larry adds, “Jo Rowling needs a new agent. Tell her to call me.”

Needless to say, JK Rowling has become embroiled in controversy in recent months after the author made a transphobic comment. After an article referred to “people who menstruate,” Rowling tweeted, “‘People who menstruate'. I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?” Rowling’s exclusion of the trans community was soon brought to light.

Since The Sandman’s bonus episode aired, fans have been debating whether the JK Rowling reference was a dig or a compliment. Some felt that the joke was throwing shade at Rowling’s career as of late, but others felt it highlighted her continual success despite her recent unresolved controversies. Either way, fans feel the topic would’ve been best left avoided.
