We've known The Elder Scrolls VI is on the way for some time now, ever since a very brief teaser trailer at Bethesda's showcase during E3 2018, but since then we've had almost no news on how things are progressing.

No news is very rarely good news in the business of game development, and it has been a fairly safe assumption that the next game is still going to be some way away, even if Todd Howard did hint that they might shadow drop it in the same way they did with the Oblivion Remastered release.

Now, new information suggests that we really will be waiting some time to get our hands-on the new RPG and we might not even be able to play it on the consoles we currently own.

As first reported by Comicbook.com, via industry insider and YouTuber Reece Reilly, new information has come to light that suggests Bethesda Game Studios is targeting a 2028 release for the new game, with 2029 also a distinct possibility at this juncture.

The interesting thing about those dates is that they may well mean that the game is actually delivered after the new set of consoles for Sony and Xbox release. Indeed, whilst a recent report suggested Sony were more than happy to hang on for a while, they were targeting a new console release in 2028/2029.

That means that we're either looking at a world where The Elder Scrolls VI releases for the next generation exclusively, or it follows a similar model to games like GTA V, where there are different versions depending on what hardware you own.

Considering the fact that it was announced two years before the PS5 or Xbox Series S/X even released, it's kind of insane to think that it won't even work on those consoles at all.

Now obviously there is the caveat that we don't currently have any way to verify the information shared by Reilly, so it shouldn't be taken as gospel, but the recent GQ interview with Todd Howard saw the Bethesda head honcho confirm the game "was still a long way off," so contextually a release before 2028 seems unlikely.

Whenever it does get here, it better be the best RPG I've ever seen or it'll almost be like waiting two decades for it come out wasn't altogether worth it.
