China’s biggest gaming firm and social network, Tencent, has been in the news a fair bit this week - it was revealed that the company is apparently aiming to become Ubisoft’s single largest shareholder, with plans to buy an additional stake (it already own a 5% stake, which was bought in 2018).
Well, not only that, but in case you missed it, it’s also been announced that Tencent Games is partnering with Logitech G to produce a new handheld console, focused on cloud gaming. What’s more, according to the official press release, it’ll apparently be coming out “later this year”.
Valve released their powerful handheld, the Steam Deck, earlier this year - take a look below.
“Logitech G’s leadership in PC and console gaming gear make them an ideal partner to help us realise the vision of bringing a better gaming experience to gamers around the globe,” Daniel Wu, the general manager of Tencent Games Smart Solution Innovation Lab said. “Today marks the start of a new opportunity for our companies to further push the frontiers of gaming devices.”

“As one of the leading global platforms for game development, publishing and operations, Tencent Games has been at the forefront of innovation and it’s why we partnered with them,” said Logitech G’s general manager, Ujesh Desai. “As someone that grew up playing video games, the idea of being able to stream and play AAA games almost anywhere is super exciting, and we can’t wait to show everyone what we’ve been working on.”
As of now, the name of the console hasn’t been announced, but as Metro writes, Tencent is such a large company, it has the money and resources to make the handheld something genuinely great, and potentially even rival other major games companies. That said, a cloud gaming-focused handheld could be a difficult sell - you need a strong, constant internet connection for cloud gaming, something which, if you’re out and about, you’re far less likely to have, which might end up defeating the portability of the console.
Assuming it releases on time, we should be seeing Tencent Games' console and all it has to offer within the next four months.
