Battlefield meets Dark Souls in new RPG unlike anything you’ve seen before

You can shoot guns on top of a wolf?! Game of the year.

A game I have literally never heard of that looks like a weirdly cool blend of Dark Souls and Battlefield just popped up out of nowhere, and immediately earned itself a place at the top of my Steam wishlist.

Chains of Lukomorye is an upcoming "souls-like" third-person shooter from developer and publisher Forge Ahead, and this one already looks like it could be something genuinely special.

The developers state that the story has you play as “a WWI soldier” as he “journeys into Slavic folklore to reclaim his lost love”, and if that isn’t the coolest premise you’ve heard for a video game, then you are simply unpleasable.

They’ve also released a couple of trailers for the game following its announcement last month, including the “Cinematic Trailer”, which shows you fighting alongside your companion, Sirin, journeying through a magical forest, coming into contact with a walking house, and even meeting a big old cat.

It seems your partner Sirin is integral to the combat too, whether you choose to play the game solo or in co-op. The whole thing is giving me Remnant 2 vibes, and I mean that as a compliment.

Oh, and there’s also a different trailer that shows off an extended combat sequence, although you should be warned that they shoot a cute dog in the face during it.

Honestly, I think this game looks incredible from what I’ve seen so far. Cool setting, combat looks tight, voice acting seems good– I’m very much keen to give this a go already.

Also, the concept art on the Steam page for the game shows you riding a giant wolf while you gun down enemies. What more could you possibly want from a game?

Perhaps my only gripe is that I’m not a fan of the QTE segment in the gameplay trailer, but as long as that’s a scripted event (and not something that occurs during general combat), I think I can let it slide.

No word on a release date for Chains of Lukomorye yet or any confirmed platforms other than Steam, but it looks pretty far into development to me. I hope the devs take their time to deliver this one, though, because I think they might be onto something special here.
