Forget Titanfall 3, a new free FPS has arrived to fill the void

It's free, it's fun, it looks gorgeous... so what's the catch?

A brand new mecha first-person-shooter is attempting to succeed where Titanfall 2 failed, but do the ridiculously high player numbers reflect its quality?

Mecha BREAK is a free-to-play PvP mech game from developer and publisher Amazing Seasun Games, and it went live on Steam this morning after several months of betas.

As of writing, it’s peaked at a concurrent player count of roughly 97,000, which is pretty huge considering this is a new IP.

It’s apparently fun to play, it looks gorgeous, and it’s free… so why is the review score on Steam currently sitting at a “Mixed” score?

Well, no prizes for figuring out why (but I’ll let the Steam reviewers handle the explanation from here).

“Was a huge fan of both the betas that came out, but instantly lost all desire to even start up a game after seeing how much of the customisation that was in the beta being either removed entirely, or added behind a paywall and user marketplace,” writes reviewer Vellie.

“Don't even get me started on the 50 dollar bundle of skins that cannot be customised.”

“I played the game before release and loved it. I was excited to play it until I was greeted by the insane 'micro' transactions and an auction house you can sell said 'micro' transactions on!” writes user qzacidman.

“$47.99 for a pilot and mech?! Wtf?! You can straight up pay money to extract items from mashmak (aka the extraction mode)! Who thought this was a good idea? This game had the potential to be the next big thing but now I feel dirty playing it!”

Now, to be completely fair to Mecha BREAK, some of the reviewers are also stating that the “microtransactions” are mostly just cosmetic, and there aren’t actually any real pay-to-win elements to what you can purchase.

If that’s something that doesn’t bother you, it seems like this one could still be worth checking out (although you may want to wait for the devs to respond to some of the player feedback first).

It's available on Steam and Xbox Series X/S now.
