Xbox new console design leaks, and fans are torn on it

Xbox teams up with Meta

Xbox fans have seen the design for a new type of console, and they’re pretty torn on it.

Earlier this month, Xbox announced the ROG Xbox Ally, a handheld PC that’s running a custom Xbox operating system. It’s basically Xbox’s answer to Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch.

It seems that Microsoft isn’t stopping there, because the company is also working with Meta to create a new limited edition Meta Quest that potentially plays Xbox games.

“Xbox and Meta teamed up last year to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) to Meta Quest, letting people play Xbox games on a large 2D virtual screen in mixed reality,” Meta said last year. “Now, we’re working together again to create a limited-edition Meta Quest, inspired by Xbox.”

Now, new rumours suggest this might be announced as soon as next week, and images of the headset have leaked online.

A user on X (formerly Twitter) known as Zuby Tech has posted an image of the “Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition” box, and fans are torn.

“Someone in MS [Microsoft] just goin round stampin Xbox logos on everything,” joked one user.

“I hate that I'm kinda considering one,” another user wrote. “I prefer the Xbox black to the Meta white.”

“Oh this will be great for my large library of Xbox VR games, my favourite Xbox VR game is,” wrote one user before abruptly finishing the comment. The joke is that Xbox games don’t have VR support, at least on console.

However, there are plenty of multi-platform games available on Xbox that have VR components on PC or PlayStation 5, such as Superhot, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Hitman: World of Assassination.

Xbox also owns Microsoft Flight Simulator and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, which both have VR support on PC. So it’s possible Xbox could be making early plans to support VR headsets in the future.

There’s also a chance that we’re reading into this too much, and this is just an Xbox branded Meta Quest 3S to promote the fact you can now play Xbox Cloud Gaming on Meta Quest.

Still, with Microsoft branching out into different forms of hardware for the next generation, we wouldn’t be surprised if a Virtual Reality headset is on the cards. We’ll wait and see what the future holds.
