The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Trailer Gives Us Our First Look at Yoshi and Baby Mario

Is that... Mouser?

We finally just got our first proper look at Nintendo and Illumination's upcoming sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and it looks like the new movie will be taking inspiration from several Mario games beyond just Super Mario Galaxy.

The latest Nintendo Direct has already come and gone, but it did leave something very juicy behind on its way out: a new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Considering it’s only two minutes long (and there’s a little bit of footage we’ve seen before in here), it’s surprisingly packed in terms of reveals.

There’s the obvious one; our first (proper) look at Yoshi, who was teased at the end of the first movie. Whoever decided to inflict the emotional pain of witnessing a sad, terrified Yoshi upon my eyes is a monster, and I will never forgive them.

However, there’s also a lot of pretty out-of-left-field references in this.

Seeing Baby Mario and Baby Luigi isn’t too much of a deep cut, and I’m glad we’re getting some content from the best Mario game ever made, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (don’t at me), but… is that Mouser?

I had to Google “mouse with sunglasses from Mario” just so I could remember what his name is. Sorry in advance for being a fake gaming journalist.

We also get a look at Birdo, who has famously been described as a trans icon. That means The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is officially woke, which will undoubtedly upset everyone on Twitter in t-minus 0.3 seconds.

A couple of small asides: firstly, Yoshi can be seen holding a SNES Super Scope as if it’s an automatic rifle towards the end of the trailer, which is hilarious for a hundred different reasons.

Secondly, I was trying to find out if Nintendo has announced who will be voicing the new characters introduced in the film, and I couldn’t find anything online. However, am I absolutely losing it when I say that Yoshi sounds exactly like Jar Jar Binks’ voice and mocap actor, Ahmed Best? I’m just saying, if that ends up being true, I deserve a medal or something.

Anyway, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be released on April 1st, 2026, which is not a joke, and also much sooner than I expected. Here’s hoping that, this time, we get a Super Smash Bros. teaser as a post-credits scene, because I want to see Samus ASAP.
