The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has released its first official trailer, and we’re in for a treat.
It was inevitable that the Super Mario Bros Movie would get a sequel, and Nintendo/Illumination were clearly confident about sticking that post-credit tease in there. That said I don’t think anyone would have expected the films to blast into the Super Mario Galaxy lore so soon.
Tuning into the trailer shown during today’s Nintendo Direct we got details on the plot, a look at the new characters and who has been cast, as well as some clips from the film which already looks like an intergalactic adventure we simply can’t wait to watch on the big-screen.
In the trailer we see Mario and Luigi minding the mighty Bowser, who’s still tiny after being defeated at the end of the last film.

To replace Bowser, his son Bowser Jr has arrived to avenge his father and take over the Mushroom Kingdom, as well as the galaxy. Fans notice he's wielding powers similar to those seen in Super Mario Sunshine, wielding paint/goop to create constructs like a spiked ball.

As a Super Mario Galaxy movie we also get Rosalina, who appears at the end of the trailer and obliterates a mechanical monstrosity with ease, clearly going to be a bit of a powerhouse and excellent companion for Mario and friends.
To play these iconic characters, Brie Larson was drafted in to play Rosalina, whereas Bowser Jr will be played by Benny Safdie, and I'm here for both of these choices.
Weirdly though one character was missing...Yoshi. We know Yoshi is going to be in the film because he was teased in the previous one, and we've actually already seen his Illumination design as it leaked earlier this week on a box of sugar cookies of all things.
Not being in the trailer is certainly an interesting decision by Nintendo as it's not like he's going to be a surprise, but maybe we have to wait for the second trailer to give the green dinosaur his day.
It also makes you wonder what the post-credit scene will be for this film too, perhaps Wario and Waluigi? Or maybe a trip to Isle Delfino? Only time will tell.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie launches into cinemas next year, on 3 April 2026, and it looks like it's going to miles better than the first film.
