Nintendo has just released a new free update for Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Nintendo Switch, adding new story content.
In the interest of keeping the spirit of Super Mario Galaxy alive, Nintendo has been releasing a bunch of related material out lately.
Starting with the release of last year’s Super Mario Galaxy 1+2, as well as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie earlier this month, Nintendo has followed this up with free Galaxy-themed icons and other releases to tie into the wider franchise.
This has now come in the form of a new free update to Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 which adds new story content to the second game.

As revealed in the latest patch notes for Update Ver. 1.4.0, “A new story has been added to the storybook. Once Final Chapter is available in the storybook, you can read the new story by clearing any galaxy and earning a Power Star.”
Now, I ought to say that if you’re expecting a new playable galaxy or world to explore, you may be sorely disappointed. The new story content is quite minimal, but for Rosalina fans there’s a fun mini story here to enjoy.
Titled ‘Epilogue -Journey-’, the new chapter features Rosalina “having a premonition that a new star would soon be born”.
Waiting in the garden alone, she sees two streaks of light in the night sky: a blue light being chased by a purple light. The two lights playfully circle each other, transforming into two suns.
This causes the garden to be filled with warm sunlight, with the sound of the wind turning into a waltz. As Rosalina witnesses this, she speaks to a young girl which is implied to be her younger self from the first story book.
The epilogue ends with Rosalina going back inside, where she is met with a great number of Lumas in the bedroom awaiting a bedtime story.
All-in-all, it’s nothing too substantial, but does tie a neat bow on both Super Mario Galaxy games.
Additionally, the new song featured in the epilogue has also been added to the Nintendo Music app, available for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers to listen to.
With the new content arriving in Super Mario Galaxy 2 a whole 16 years after its original release, it does seem a little unexpected to suddenly receive this epilogue.
But with the recent attention being paid to the IP between the re-release on Switch and the movie, it makes sense why Nintendo might want to drum up interest in the games once again.
Whether or not it funnels that interest into a potential Super Mario Galaxy 3 remains to be seen, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the rumoured new 3D Mario game has something to do with it.
