There is something very pure about playing a game that centres on dinosaurs, where it really feels like the essence of video games is distilled into its purest form.
Turok is probably the most obvious example of that, but it extends out to games like Jurassic World Evolution (or if you're old like me, Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis) and even the robotic dinosaur-esque fauna we see in the Horizon series.
Now, there's another game that looks like it hits all the right notes dinosaur-wise, only it chooses to let the player run through the game as a dino themselves, only this time wielding an enormous sword, and what's not like about that.

Dinoblade Gets Free Steam Download
As a game, Dinoblade is one of the weirder ones to have to describe to you, so we'll let the developer do it in their own words, where they say the game is "an intense action RPG set in a prehistoric world forever changed by a cataclysmic event, one that redefined the very nature of Dinosaurs.

"Step into the role of a young Spinosaurus, wielding a colossal Great Sword forged from ancient power. Confront rival dinosaurs, some armed with brutal weapons of their own, all in a desperate fight to prevent a looming extinction."
So far, so mad, but it does look like there are some genuinely exciting gameplay loops here that should appeal to fans of any action-based genre. The game features both mini-boss enemies and larger set piece fights at the end of each level, where you will take on much larger and more dangerous foes.
Each time you emerge victorious, you will earn something known as Strength, which in turn allows you to unlock new skills and devastating abilities which you can tune to the way you want to play when in combat.
This essentially adds some pseudo-RPG elements to a game that's already brimming with action.

The game is set for release at some point in 2026, though the developer won't currently be drawn on a specific date. The good news is that, in the meantime, there is a totally free demo available for those of you who want to give it a go.
That will allow you to experience the introduction and first hour of the game, culminating in one of those boss battles that should make and break its success when it does hit a full release.
