Did you know if you go on the official page for Yoda’s species on Wookiepedia, it lists said species as… uh, “Yoda’s species”?
Yeah, that’s not a joke. This isn’t the set up for some kind of extended bit. Whatever Yoda is in the Star Wars universe, we don’t have a name for it.
In a sense, you could argue that’s just part of the mysterious charm of Yoda.
After all, the first time we’re introduced to Yoda in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, he says some cryptic stuff about how “Size matters not” (ayo, pause), sends Luke off to get absolutely rocked by his dad, and then just straight up dies the next time he’s on screen.

This dude is a straight-up enigma. However, now that Disney has hold of the Star Wars license, it’s been teased that we’ll finally learn a little bit about Yoda’s species in The Mandalorian & Grogu next year… but we may not actually have to wait that long.
That’s because it turns out that George Lucas himself actually told us a bit about Yoda’s parental origins in a DVD extras segment found in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones original release.
In a short documentary titled Star Wars: From Puppets To Pixels, Lucas reveals that Yoda’s parents are actually… um… Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy. Y’know, from The Muppets.
No, I’m not making this up.

“Big thighs... huge thighs... Kermit thighs…” states Lucas.
"What we've done is… we're going to blend Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy. The illegitimate child of Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy. We've never discussed this before, and don't let it get out."
Look, let’s be real; there’s a good chance Lucas is joking here.
But that’s not the issue. The real problem is, considering everything we know about Lucas’ creative process, there is a genuine chance that he’s telling a bit of a half-truth here.

I mean, The Jim Henson Company did literally help design Yoda’s puppet in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.
There is, sadly, a non-zero per cent chance that this is the canon origin of Yoda’s design.
