Star Wars Sequel in Jeopardy Following Alarming Update

A sequel has allegedly been cancelled

It looks like the future of Star Wars Outlaws has been put in jeopardy following an alarming update from the studio.

Back in July, we reported that the Star Wars Outlaws sequel had been reportedly cancelled. It was claimed that the game sequel was “very, very early in development” before being scrapped.

This was allegedly due to lower than expected sales of the game, which launched back in August 2024.

However, the game still sold well enough for Ubisoft to fund a port on Nintendo Switch 2, which launched last month. Although exact sales figures aren’t available, the port remained at the top of the Switch 2’s charts and was one of the bestselling games in September.

Despite this, it looks like any hopes for a Star Wars Outlaws sequel have disappeared following a new update from Ubisoft and the developer, Massive Entertainment.

Massive Entertainment

What's happening at Massive?

As first reported by Le Figaro and later acknowledged by Ubisoft, Massive is undergoing a voluntary redundancy program along with Ubisoft Stockholm. This also coincides with a restructuring proposal at Trials studio RedLynx, which could see 60 employees laid off.

“As part of our ongoing evolution and long-term planning, we have recently realigned our teams and resources to strengthen our roadmap, ensuring our continued focus on The Division franchise and technologies, including Snowdrop and Ubisoft Connect, that power our games,” reads the statement by Massive Entertainment.

“To support this transition responsibly, we introduced a voluntary career transition program, giving eligible employees team members the opportunity to take their next career step on their own terms, supported by a comprehensive package that includes financial and career assistance.

“Massive Entertainment remains fully committed to our roadmap and to creating great experiences for players around the world, including The Division 2, The Division 2: Survivors, The Division Resurgence, and The Division 3,” it continues. “These projects continue with strength, focus, and ambition, and we look forward to sharing more in the future.”

In addition to Star Wars Outlaws, Massive also developed Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. However, it’s probably best known for developing the Tom Clancy’s The Division games.

The Division 3 is next up on the developer’s slate, a game that was announced back in 2023 but hasn’t seen much in the way of updates recently.

However, considering how well The Division does for Ubisoft, I’d imagine this remains a larger priority for Massive than its other recent projects.
