Amazing Star Wars Concept Art Shows Scrapped ‘Episode 9 - Duel Of The Fates’ Film

Colin Trevorrow's cancelled Duel of the Fates would've focused on the rule of the First Order.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a promising start for the sequel trilogy. The film perfectly balanced fan-service nostalgia with the introduction of interesting new characters and overall, garnered a much better reception than the prequels. It’s a great shame then that the sequel trilogy eventually lost its way.

The problem is that whilst the sequel trilogy offered up some interesting storylines and visuals, the overall product was disjointed. Rian Johnson’s ideas didn’t match up with J.J. Abrams’ ideas. There was no overarching plan which meant that whilst The Rise of Skywalker was a perfectly enjoyable film, it wasn’t a wholly satisfying ending. Colin Trevorrow’s cancelled Episode 9 though could’ve been the finale the trilogy needed.

Check out the trailer for Star Wars: Andor ahead of its premiere on Disney Plus on 31 August.

That’s right. Trevorrow was originally set to direct Episode 9 which he’d titled Duel of the Fates. The film would’ve been primarily set on Coruscant with Trevorrow choosing to focus on the effects of the First Order’s iron rule. Trevorrow’s finale would’ve been set on Mortis as opposed to Exegol, and the film would’ve ideally featured Leia in a much more prominent role - although this ultimately wouldn’t have been possible due to Carrie Fisher’s tragic passing.

We’ll never get to see Trevorrow’s vision truly come to life but concept art for Duel of the Fates does exist, and it has recently resurfaced online (Thanks to Reddit user wendigo72). The artwork shows us just how unique and action-packed Trevorrow’s finale could’ve been. Take a look below.

Rey totally should’ve wielded that very cool double-ended lightsaber, and it looks like Duel of the Fates might’ve even featured the Zeffo from Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Trevorrow’s vision was clearly pretty dark. That laser guillotine is no joke. It’s certainly a far cry from The Rise of Skywalker.
