There are several franchises from the pantheon of gaming history that are so iconic, it's a bit of an event any time we get something new set within them.
Mario is the most obvious example, but there are several other characters who have almost as much of a right to the crown of most instantly recognisable in video games.
One of those is Sonic, with the speedy blue hedgehog a mainstay on the gaming scene for more than three decades at this point. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is one of the more recent additions to that list, drawing all the attention back in September, but another Sonic game has just dropped that should appeal both existing and new fans.
Sonic Rumble released on 5 November and it marks the first release in the franchise to be developed by Rovio after they were acquired by Sega in 2023. It's essentially a party battle royale game that should be fairly recognisable if you were playing games during the Fall Guys boom of 2020.

The premise of the game follows Sonic and friends in a "diabolical toy world" developed by series antagonist Dr Eggman. If you're an older fan of the series, you should be pretty delighted with the levels on offer, with many of them being drawn from classic stages in the earlier games, like Green Hill Zone and Sky Sanctuary.

The goal is essentially to progress through each round without getting eliminated, in the hope of being the final player standing and collecting a shiny crown for your troubles. You can also play alone or squad up with friends, so it should be a solid choice next time you're looking for something fun to play as a group.
You can choose from pretty much all of the instantly recognisable characters from the series history, including Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, Dr. Eggman and many more. Equally, you can make those characters a little more unique to your own style by using the game's customisation system, with a ton of cosmetic items to unlock.
The PC version of the game is currently available on Steam, with a mobile version also ready if you're looking to play on the go. In even better news, it's also totally free to play, so you don't have to part with any of your hard earned cash to get in on the action.
